AI in creative workflows: how SLIK uses AI to improve creative craft, not just speed

Most of the conversation about AI in advertising is about speed. Faster turnarounds, more output, lower cost. These benefits are real, but they're just part of the equation for Sydney-based creative agency SLIK.

SLIK is known for using AI in their creative workflows to improve their creative craft, not just to simply speed things up.

The team is pushing boundaries with AI workflows – from proofs of concept and design all the way through to production and delivery. At every stage and every touchpoint, there is always a human in the loop. Art directors, designers, copywriters and motion designers all play a key role in every touchpoint, ensuring consistency and craft remain at the fore.

That philosophy is formalised in SLIK’s AI Film & Animation Studio, an in-house capability built around one belief: AI should elevate craft, not replace it.

How SLIK uses AI to improve their creative craft

The explosion of channels, formats and placements has created one of marketing's hardest production problems. How do you scale creative without the quality falling away?

Volume work gets templated and flattened, while the crafted work is limited to a handful of hero pieces. AI can flip that equation, but only in the hands of people who know what ‘great’ looks like.

That's why SLIK has adopted advanced AI-driven production workflows entirely in-house. Keeping strategy, creative development and production under one roof means the people who set the creative vision are the same people directing the technology.

"The goal was never to build an AI capability. It was to build a production studio where AI could elevate craft," says Alex Scheider, Creative Director and Partner at SLIK.

In practice, SLIK uses AI to improve their craft in three ways. It lets the team explore more creative directions before committing to one. It takes on labour-intensive production detail, so the extra time can go into refinement. And it pushes approved creative through hundreds of assets at speed, while the team oversees the work to keep it consistent.

How SLIK uses AI in their design process

One of SLIK’s clients came to them with a brief to encourage Australians to discover its growing ecosystem of partners and services.

The answer was a bright and playful animated world, home to a cast of characters that tie multiple partners together.

SLIK used AI in their design process to develop the campaign's key visuals. But craft and human judgement directed the generation at every step. SLIK’s art directors defined the world first: using a detail-obsessed approach to establish the look, colour, characters, and visual and physical rules. Only then could the real AI work begin.

AI-driven production workflows: from key visual to all formats

Once the key visuals were locked, they became the foundation for everything else. The approved world flowed into motion, then out into every asset and size the campaign needed.

That's where SLIK's proprietary AI-driven production workflows earned their place. SLIK's craft-first production model delivered more than 130 bespoke creative assets across film, out-of-home, social and print. That included 81 out-of-home executions, 32 social variants across three platforms, and 15-second videos for YouTube and BVOD.

Character animation

Character animation is where the team can really use AI to improve their creative craft. Subtle movement – like the movement of fur or the subtle twitch of whiskers – along with secondary motion, has traditionally taken significant time and manual effort to animate well. By combining AI-assisted animation with human refinement, the team can produce richer, more expressive scenes in a fraction of the time, without dropping the quality of the finish.

Dynamic creative at scale

Adaptation is usually where campaigns lose their polish. Master roll-out – the work of resizing one hero execution into hundreds of formats – tends to become a cropping exercise. SLIK includes resizing as part of their advanced AI-driven production workflow to adapt hero creative into hundreds of assets and sizes, with each one still composed, on-brand and properly crafted.

One team, from concept to delivery

Because SLIK’s AI workflows are bespoke and run in-house, the same art directors who establish a campaign's visual language stay closely involved through production. That removes the

traditional handover between concept and execution, and it's why every asset feels cohesive, considered and consistent.

SLIK's AI-driven production workflows let one creative team take a campaign from first concept to final delivery across every channel.

"This isn't about replacing artists with AI," says Scheider. "It's about giving artists better tools to create more ambitious work, with greater consistency and at a scale that's increasingly demanded by modern brands."

Pushing boundaries with AI workflows means more direction, not less

AI-generated work is often framed as instantaneous: type a prompt, press a button, get an output. SLIK’s experience is very different.

The quality of the generation depends on the thinking that comes before it. You have to define the world, establish its visual and physical rules, give the system the right context, then direct the generation within those constraints. That takes taste, judgement, experimentation and craft.

The technology is part of the creative process. It isn't the process.

For SLIK, pushing boundaries with AI workflows doesn't mean using AI wherever they can. It means building workflows that let skilled people make more ambitious work than they ever could before.

What's next: agentic AI and creative in-housing

The same thinking now shapes the tools SLIK build for clients. Beyond the agency’s own AI-driven production workflows, SLIK builds agentic AI tools that help clients work better.

This has culminated in a brand-new business arm called MagicTrik, which offers creative in-housing for Australian brands. MagicTrik builds creative studios inside organisations, teaching their people how to use AI in their creative workflows, automation and templates. The result is teams that can launch campaigns at speed, without losing quality.

MagicTrik's toolkit includes a Brief Builder that guides teams to audience truths and tensions, and an AdChecker that scores work against eight effectiveness rules before it runs. A Resizer turns one hero asset into every format, from stories to big screens, while a Template Builder turns the best designs into ready-to-go templates. A Comms Planner maps a brief across every channel, and an LLM Visibility Checker shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity surface a brand when consumers ask about related topics.

It's the same craft-first philosophy behind SLIK’s AI Film & Animation Studio, put directly into their clients' hands.
